Obituary for Donald J. "Don" Falk

Donald J. Falk, 82, of Morocco, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 28, 2013 at Jasper County Hospital. He was born in Lowell on Dec. 10, 1930, the son of Vern Falk, Sr. and Vaneta (Potts) Falk. He was a lifelong area resident.

Don graduated from Morocco High School with the Class of 1949. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS for Basic Combat Training, and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX for the duration of his time in the Army. A month before he was discharged from the Army, he had a unique opportunity and volunteered to go to the Nevada Proving Grounds to help test an atomic bomb.

On July 25, 1954, Don married his wife of 59 years, Edmere (Smart) Falk. Together they had two children: Michael and Deborah. He owned and operated Cassell & Falk Clothing Store in Morocco for several years. He then worked for Ford Motor Co. for 31 years, where he was a supervisor in security, Safety Engineer, and Fire Chief over the Plant Fire Dept. on the midnight shift.

Don served his community as a member of the Morocco Town Board for almost 20 years, serving eight years as Town Board President. He was a member of the Morocco Masonic Lodge Post #372 and a 50-year member of Morocco American Legion Post #146.

After his retirement, Don enjoyed spending the winters in Gulf Shores, AL with his wife. He enjoyed watching old Westerns and working in his yard.

Don is survived by his loving family: wife Edmere Falk of Morocco; one son, Michael Falk (wife: Sandy) of Almond, WI; one daughter, Deborah Selby of Fort Mill, SC; seven grandchildren: Stephanie Falk, Matt Falk, and Ashley Falk, all of Kalamazoo, MI; Nathan Falk (wife: Tori) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Meghan Selby and Brittany Selby, both of York, SC; and Haley Selby of Fort Mill, SC; one brother, Vern Falk, Jr. (wife: Donna) of Morocco. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers: Robert and Richard; and a sister, Betty.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. (CDT) at the Morocco Community Center, located at 409 S. Polk Street in Morocco. A Masonic service will be held at the Community Center at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Community Center on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. (CDT) with Rev. Royal Voeller officiating.
