Anna Pauline Halsema, age 102, of Indianapolis, formerly of Fair Oaks, Indiana passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at Hooverwood Home in Indianapolis. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 16, 1918, the daughter of Felix Hansen and Anna (Gross) Hansen. She was a graduate of Fair Oaks High School. She married Charles E. Halsema, Sr. on April 29, 1937.
Anna worked as the Post Mistress of the Fair Oaks Post Office for over 20 years, from the late 1960s through the late 1980s, having been appointed by Lyndon B. Johnson. She was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer and St. Monica in Indianapolis. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 29 in Rensselaer. She was an excellent baker and was known for her pies. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and reading.
She is survived by her four children: Charles “Chuck” Halsema, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, Wayne (P.J.) Halsema of Rensselaer, William “Bill” (Nancy) Halsema of Indianapolis, and Scherrie Ryan of Windsor, California; eight grandchildren: Jim Halsema, Carol (Don) Wilson, and Susan (Kyle) Boettger, all of Phoenix, Arizona, Mike (Tracy) Halsema of Gatesville, Texas, Cassandra (Kevin) Lowe of Indianapolis, Tom Halsema of Houston, Texas, Veronica (David) Onofrey of Indianapolis, and Jason (Niki) Ryan of North Las Vegas, Nevada. Seven great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Anna Hansen; her husband, Charles Halsema, Sr.; four brothers: Joe (Helen) Hansen, Ed (Helen) Hansen, Bob (Frieda) Hansen, and Leon (Ruth) Hansen; and one sister, Minnie (John) Kennedy.
Due to the pandemic, private burial took place place at Fair Oaks Cemetery. A memorial service for Anna will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 12pm (CDT) at Fair Oaks Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating her life. Memories and stories will be shared at a luncheon afterward at 1pm (CDT) at Wayne Halsema's home: 5638 S. 850 W, Rensselaer, IN 47978. All are welcome to attend.
