Obituary for Clarence A. "Tom" Thompson

Clarence A. “Tom” Thompson, 90, of Morocco, passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2022 at the Rensselaer Care Center. He was born in Webster, North Carolina on July 17, 1931 to Ennis and Bertha (Hooper) Thompson. On Sept. 15, 1958, in Morocco, he married the love of his life, Shirley S. (McGregor) Thompson.

Clarence enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in the 83rd Engineer Construction Battalion during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. When he got out of the service he worked as a carpenter. Clarence liked to keep busy and worked part-time mowing and landscaping until the age of 80. He was a proud member of Morocco American Legion Post #146 and he was affiliated with the United Church of Morocco. He enjoyed traveling to North Carolina every year to visit family.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Thompson; four children: Michelle (Wayne) Kindig, Kathy Miiller (friend Jim), Raymond (Linda) Thompson, and Pamela (Brian) Vanderwall; seven grandchildren: Catrina (Joshua) Spiker, Tonya (Rune) Gusevik, Danielle (Craig) Sands, Marcus Miiller, David (Sarah) Thompson, Jaclyn Kindig (friend Robert), and Chloe Vanderwall. Several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Eliza Mae Evans, Gladys Wilson, Mildred Moody, Francis Turpin, Anna Lou Conard; two brothers, Gene Thompson and Roy Thompson; one half-brother, Dewitt Thompson; and two half-sisters, Amy Jones and Bessie Dempsey.

Private services with military honors will be held at a later date. Contributions in Clarence’s name may be made to Morocco American Legion Post #146. Steinke Funeral Home has been entrusted with the cremation arrangements.
