Obituary for Clifford Eugene "Gene" James

Clifford Eugene “Gene” James, a lifelong resident of Morocco, Indiana passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at the age of 88. Gene was born in Morocco on August 14, 1934, to Clifford Raymond James and Verna Edna (Collins) James.

He was a graduate of Morocco High School and served for 7 ½ years in the Indiana National Guard. Gene was the owner-operator of James Grocery & Sporting Goods Store on State Road 114 in Morocco for nearly 40 years, a business started by his parents. He retired in December, 1999.

Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Minnesota over the years. In the winter months, he liked to go ice fishing at Willow Slough and work on his woodworking projects.

He was an old car enthusiast and enjoyed restoring and driving antique cars. He was a member of the Northwest Indiana Model Ters, and enjoyed monthly tours and meeting new friends and fellow car enthusiasts. He was especially proud of a 1906 Model N that he restored, which won Best of Show everywhere he took it.

Gene was a diehard Chicago Bears fan and he loved his canine companions over the years, his Yorkshire Terriers. First Gidget, and now Cricket.

On November 15, 1980 he married his wife of 41 years, Patricia (Wetli) James, and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Todd (Deana) James and Cary (Gayle) James; six grandchildren: Brittney, Brett, Robby, Ethan, Parker and Carly; six great-grandchildren, and one great-grandson on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends are invited to visit with the family on Monday, October 17, 2022 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Steinke Funeral Home of Morocco. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022 at 12 p.m. at Steinke Funeral Home of Morocco with Pastor Patrick Gutwein officiating. Military Honors will follow at the funeral home. Steinke Funeral Home is honored to be handling the arrangements.
