Donald M. VanHouten, 60, of Rensselaer, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018 at IU Health Arnett Hospital, surrounded by his family. Don was born in Rensselaer on June 6, 1958, the son of Marvin Paul VanHouten and Eileen Emily (Davis) VanHouten. He was a 1976 graduate of North Newton High School. He went on to study diesel mechanics at Lincoln Tech. On June 27, 1981, at the First Assembly of God Church in Rensselaer, he married Kimberly Kay Lane.
Don worked for Ceres Solutions for 21 years. He was a serviceman and delivered LP gas. Prior to that he was the plant manager for Hicks Gas in Rensselaer. He loved his customers and they loved him. Don was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who might need his help.
He was an active member of DeMotte Calvary Assembly of God. He liked to fish and he enjoyed world history. Most of all, Don loved spending time with his family and being a grandfather to his six grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kim VanHouten; three children: Jamie Rose Magee (husband Vincent), Nathan Donald VanHouten (wife Marie), and Megan Marie VanHouten (fiancé Jon Sobral); six grandchildren: Aleah and Brayden Magee, Lilly Corning, Faith VanHouten, and Dylan and Evan Sorbal; his mother, Eileen VanHouten; two sisters, Roberta Ford (husband Phillip) and Beverly Adams (husband Monte); and two brothers, David VanHouten (wife Annette) and Daniel VanHouten (wife Melissa). Also surviving are his in-laws, Melvin and Judy Lane; brother-in-law Randy Lane (wife Stefanie); two sisters-in-law, Deanna Lane and Tonya Krintz (husband Jeff); and 15 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer with Pastor James Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
