Earl Hensler, 98, of Rensselaer, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Rensselaer Care Center. He was born in Remington on May 18, 1916, son of the late Add and Ethel (Hackley) Hensler. He graduated from Remington High School with the class of 1935 and was a lifelong Jasper County resident. On May 28, 1938, in Colfax, Indiana he married Virginia McFadden. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2008.
Earl started farming in 1938 and was a lifetime farmer. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Remington, the Odd Fellows, and the Farm Bureau. He served on the board of Jasper/Newton County Farm Credit. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and had traveled through all the states except Alaska, and had visited at least 15 foreign countries. For over 30 years he and his wife spent their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. They also had a cottage on Lake Shafer. Earl also enjoyed antiques.
Earl is survived by his loving family: one son, Robert (Sharlyn) Hensler of Rensselaer; one daughter, Janice (Jim) Coddington of Lafayette; four grandchildren: Debbie (Joe) Honn of Battleground, Brad Coddington of San Diego, California, Shawnda (Nick) Scott of Frankfort, and Bona (Heather) Hensler of Rensselaer; nine great grandchildren: Travis (Nadine) Honn of West Lafayette, Brandon Honn of Lafayette, Shana (Josh) Greiner of Lafayette, Makayla Honn of Union City, Ayo Scott in the Air Force in Virginia, Sage Scott of Frankfort, and Blake, Adeline and Caleb Hensler of Rensselaer; two great-great grandchildren, Winston and Cecelia Greiner of Lafayette; adopted by the family: Jim and Joyce Ontrop of Coldwater, Ohio; three godchildren: Chris Ontrop and Caryn Timmerman, both of Coldwater, Ohio and Brandon Bice of Brook; one sister-in-law, Jean Hensler of Phoenix, Arizona; and loving special caregiver Mary (Lane) Kampenga of DeMotte.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Virginia; two brothers: Glenn and Ralph; and two sisters: Opal and Lucile.
Friends may call on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. An Odd Fellows service will be held at the funeral home Friday evening. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 10 a.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer with Pastor Melvin Lane officiating. Interment will follow at Weston Cemetery.
