Obituary for Emily L. Price (McKenna)
Emily L. Price, 90, of Rensselaer, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at her home. She was born in South Orange, NJ on Jan. 25, 1923, daughter of the late Thomas Joseph McKenna and Emilie (Goethe) McKenna. Her parents were both immigrants: her father from Ireland, and her mother from Alsace-Lorraine.
Emily attended St. Vincent Academy in Newark, NJ, graduating in 1939. She went on to attend Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, NJ. She graduated from Montclair State with a B.A. in 1944, and a M.A. in 1946, majoring in English and Physical Education. She was a teacher and lecturer for 46 years, teaching from elementary to college level courses. She taught school in Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Illinois and Indiana, teaching the last 30 years of her career at Rensselaer Central High School. She retired in 1988.
Emily married John Charles Price in 1946. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1991. Together they had two sons: Charles Michael Price and Thomas Barry Price. Emily enjoyed breeding and showing collies. She was a member of the Collie Club on America, Illiana Collie Fanciers, Indiana Collie Club and the Greater Lafayette Kennel Club.
Emily is survived by her two sons: Charles Michael Price of Rensselaer and Thomas Barry Price (wife: Marilyn) of Frankfort, IN. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
Emily has requested no memorial service, and asked for cremation and burial next to her husband at Lawrenceville City Cemetery in Lawrenceville, IL. Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer is handling the arrangements. Share memories and condolences online at SteinkeFuneralHome.com.
