Gloria Mae Garmong, 75, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Franciscan Health Lafayette East. She was born December 2, 1945 in Heyworth, Illinois, the daughter of James Holderby and Jule Vivian (Blahut) Holderby. She was a 1963 graduate of Morocco High School. On June 3, 1967, in Morocco, Indiana she married her husband of 53 years, Rick Garmong.
Gloria earned her degree in nursing from Purdue University. After college, she and Rick lived in Terre Haute but moved back to Newton County in 1970 to begin farming. She worked for several years as an RN at the former George Ade Memorial Hospital.
She left her nursing position to be a stay-at-home mom and help with the farm. In addition to doing the bookkeeping, she worked side by side with Rick on the back 40 driving a tractor and combine for many years. She was also a licensed real estate agent.
Gloria enjoyed dancing and she and Rick two-stepped for several years. She also taught line dancing classes. Her other interests included gardening, decorating, reading, writing, and taking road trips with Rick in their ’65 Chevy Impala convertible.
Gloria had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She was kind, thoughtful and loving. Whether teaching a line dance class, dancing two-step with Rick, caring for her beloved family, sewing or gardening, Gloria did it with her entire being and a genuine love of life.
She is survived by her husband, Rick Garmong of Rensselaer; two sons, Todd
(Susanne) Garmong of Marietta, Georgia and Shawn (Cindy) Garmong of Brook, Indiana; one brother, Dennis (Deanna) Holderby of Morocco, Indiana; three sisters: Patricia (Eugene) Arbuckle of Normal, Illinois, Joyce Brandt of Knox, Indiana, and Judy (Steve) Brandt of Morocco, Indiana; six grandchildren: Ricky, Catherine, Ava, Brandan, Jamie, and Austin; and two great-grandchildren, Karson and Bryson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jule Holderby, and one brother-in-law, Dave Brandt.
