Joseph L. Fyda, 56, of Wheatfield, IN passed away Friday evening, June 23, 2023 at Northwest Health – Porter in Valparaiso, IN. He was born in Rensselaer, IN on August 18, 1966 to Joseph Fyda and Vivian Fay (Johnson) Fyda.
Joe was a 1985 graduate of Kankakee Valley High School. He studied auto mechanics at Ivy Tech Community College and went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, spending two years, 7 months stationed on the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. Joe was a proud veteran and loved his military family.
He held various jobs over the years. He detasseled corn, picked blueberries, worked in lawncare, and drove a semi. He worked for the Jasper County Co-Op and was a welder at Chief Industries and Monon Trailer/Vanguard.
Joe was a kind, selfless man and always put others first. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. If someone was broken down along the side of the road, he would always stop and offer to help.
He is survived by his three sisters: Stephanie (Matt) McClung of Avon, IN, Stacie (Daniel) Daugherty of Rensselaer, IN, and Beth (Robert) Gilmore of SanPierre, IN; and four nieces and nephews: Shawna (Mike) Schoon of Shelby, IN, Jacob Bookwalter of LaPorte, IN, Rebecca Bookwalter (fiancé: Josh Bailey) of Indianapolis, IN, and Michelle Fyda of Rensselaer, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 9 a.m. until time of funeral at 11 a.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Pastor Jeremy Eisele officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Weston Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
