Obituary for Margaret Rose Steinke (Fritts)
Margaret Rose “Maggie” Steinke, age 77, of Rensselaer passed away Wednesday, September 2nd at George Ade Care Facility in Brook, IN. Margaret was born December 22, 1942 in Rensselaer, daughter of Carl and Lillie (Miller) Fritts. She grew up in DeMotte and graduated from DeMotte High School (class of ’60). On June 17, 1961 she married Donald “Butch” Steinke in DeMotte and recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.
Margaret was a homemaker, raising 6 sons. She was creative, patient, and opinionated. Over her life she spent her time painting for leisure and with her grandchildren, watching her children and grandchildren compete at the Jasper County Fair, serving as a 4-H leader, bowling on the Rensselaer Bowling league, participating in the Senior Citizen Kloggers Group, and much more. Margaret loved visiting with family and friends; in her later years, she particularly enjoyed quality phone calls.
Margaret is survived by her husband Donald and 6 sons: Pat (wife Dawn), Steinke, Nick (wife Patti) Steinke, Jeff (late wife Lena) Steinke, Tony (wife Melinda) Steinke, Tim (wife Sue) Steinke, and Ivan (wife Tara) Steinke. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren: Courtney, Savannah, Lane, Lily, Garrett, Carly, Trent, Jacob, Sara, Tyler, Madalyn (husband Joseph Smoker), Joseph, Colton, and Carson. Margaret is preceded in death by her siblings Gene Fritts, Thomas Fritts, and Michael Fritts. She is survived by 2 brothers and 1 sister: John (Jack) (wife Kathy) Fritts, James (wife Lana) Fritts and Mary (husband Tom) Greenberg.
A public funeral Mass for Margaret will be held on Tuesday, September 8th at 10:30am CST at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer with Father Joshua Bennett officiating.
Friends may celebrate Margaret’s life and visit with family on Tuesday, September 8th, 3:00-7:00pm CST at the Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Private burial will take place at the Cemetery of the Resurrection in DeMotte at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jasper County 4-H Council.
