Obituary for Max Orvil Stevens
Max Orvil Stevens, 72, of Rensselaer, passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born on March 29, 1946, in Rensselaer, to Russell Vernon “Bud” Stevens and Donna Blanch (Gasaway) Stevens.
He was a 1965 graduate of Rensselaer High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. On December 8, 1968 he married the love of his life, Linda Diana Kerns.
Max worked in the body shop at Brooks Auto Sales for several years. He was an assistant manager at Cargill for 25 years and worked for the Jasper County Highway Department for over 10 years. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department for five years.
He was a member of AmVets, The Forty and Eight, and American Legion Post #29, where he served on the Honor Guard.
He was a longtime member of the J.C. Cruisers. Max loved restoring old cars. His pride and joy were his ’47 Ford and his ’56 Crown Vic.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Stevens; daughter Donna (Jason) Horner; two grandsons, Zachary Horner and Jace Horner; one brother, Richard “Punk” (Kay) Stevens; and two sisters, Dixie Bentz and Sue (Richard) Longtin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell “Bud” and Donna Stevens; and one brother, Jerry Stevens.
Visitation will be Friday, December 14, 2018 from 3-7 p.m. (CST) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. (CST) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer with Pastor John Hostetter officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Weston Cemetery.
