Elizabeth Rains

Elizabeth (Kate) Rains, age 93 of Morocco, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 7, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Morocco. She was born in Sheldon, IL on Dec. 26, 1918, daughter of the late Pierce D. and Nancy E. (Laffoon) Armstrong. She was a lifelong area resident.


In 1937 Kate married Robert O. Martin. He preceded her in death in 1946. In 1960 she married her second husband, Grady W. Rains. He preceded her in death in 1990. Kate was a member of the United Church of Morocco. She worked as a clerk at Hancock’s Variety Store in Morocco for a number of years. After retirement, she worked at the shoe outlet in Morocco. Kate enjoyed her garden and growing flowers. She also enjoyed all types of crafts, and was very talented at making dolls and afghans for family and friends.


Kate is survived by two sons: Jerry Martin of Okeechobee, FL and Ronald Martin (wife: Donna) of Rensselaer; daughter Joyce Neibert of Morocco; and brother Sam Armstrong (wife: Rosemary) of Remington. Fifteen grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Robert Martin; her second husband Grady Rains; three sons: Richard Martin, Robert Martin, and infant son Owen Martin; son-in-law Richard Neibert; and sister Irene Hughes.


Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at Steinke Funeral Home Brunton Chapel in Morocco. Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Snell officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie Vine Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Jasper County Hospital Home Health Care and Hospice.
