George Pilipovich

August 16, 1925 — May 22, 2008

George Pilipovich, age 82, of Hobart passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 22, 2008. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post #260 of Portage. He was a Machine Operator for Union Tank for 43 years retiring in 1990. He was a former member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, joining the Dodgers when returning from World War II. He had been offered a position with the Detroit Tigers, but chose instead to come to northern Indiana and work for Union Tank as the pay was much higher than baseball players were being given in those days. He grew to love playing horseshoes and was at one time ranked 16th best in the World and 8th best in Indiana.
