George W. Schanlaub, age 86 of Morocco, passed away Monday, December 21, 2009 at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer. He was born June 4, 1923 in Mt. Ayr to the late John W. and Nora Ellen (Thomas) Schanlaub. George graduated from Mt. Ayr High School in 1942. On September 14, 1946 in Morocco, he married Ileda Dubea. She survives. George proudly served his Country in the U.S. Army. He was a crane operator for the New York Central Railroad, in Newton County and then transferred to Chicago where he worked for over 50 years. He then worked as a truck mechanic for Koch Leasing for 8 years, retiring in 1986. George attended the United Church of Morocco. He was a member of the Morocco American Legion Post #146, the Masonic Lodge and the Knights of Pythias. George was an avid reader, and in his younger years he enjoyed hunting. Surviving in addition to his wife are children: Verna Phillips of Linden, North Carolina and John Willis (Ann) Schanlaub of Snow Cap, North Carolina; a brother, Eldon (Virginia) Schanlaub of Babbit, Minnesota, 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation is Monday, December 28, 2009, 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at Steinke Funeral Home, Brunton Chapel in Morocco. Funeral services are at the funeral home at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Thomas Vance officiating. Memorials are suggested to the wife or to United Church of Morocco.
