Harold Smith Martin

April 24, 1930 — June 5, 2016

Harold Smith Martin, 86, of 414 S. Main St., Morocco, Indiana, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Franciscan St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point, Indiana. He was born to Harold Otterbein Martin and Georgia Katherine (Smith) Martin on April 24, 1930.


He was educated at Morocco High School, Class of 1948. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana and was subsequently awarded a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. He taught English at Maine Township High School, District #207, in Des Plaines and Park Ridge, Illinois for over 40 years. He served from 1951 to 1955 in the United States Air Force at Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva, New York. He had a great appreciation for fine arts and especially for antique Chinese and Japanese pottery. He was a great lover of literature and music.


During his tenure as a teacher in Chicago, he would return to Morocco on weekends and care for his parents, they both preceded him in death. After their demise, and his retirement from teaching, Harold moved permanently back to Morocco and remodeled the family home, where he resided until his passing.


Graveside services with military honors will be on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 9 a.m. at Prairie Vine Cemetery, Washington Township, Morocco, Indiana. Steinke Funeral Home of Morocco is handling the arrangements. www.SteinkeFuneralHome.com.
