John James Lonergan

John James Lonergan, a cherished member of the Surrey community, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on July 14, 1927, in Surrey, Indiana, John's life was one marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his community.

John was the son of the late John S. Lonergan and Amelia Grace (Lane) Lonergan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene M. (Kellner) Lonergan, his step-son Dale Dean Brunton, his brother-in-law Lowell Rose, and his nephews David and Brian Rose. John's legacy continues through his step-son, Rick (Karen) Brunton of Surrey, his sister, Mary Jeanette Rose of Bloomington, step-granddaughters Denise (Justin) Sorber and Tiffany Brunton, step-great-granddaughter Paige Brianne Sorber, and niece Nancy (William) Mitchell.

He was a proud graduate of Fair Oaks High School, Class of 1945, where he was named Valedictorian. John's intelligence and leadership qualities were evident early on. He answered the call of duty and served as an Army veteran in the Korean War, where he fought bravely at the Battle of Pork Chop Hill. His service to his country was a defining period of his life, and he continued his commitment to fellow veterans as a lifetime member of the VFW.

After his military service, John returned to his roots in Surrey, where he became a lifelong farmer. Alongside his step-son Rick, he cultivated the land until his retirement in 1997. John's knowledge and wisdom extended beyond the fields, as friends often sought his legal and business advice, recognizing him as a man of great intelligence and insight.

John's dedication to his community was unwavering. He served on the Rensselaer Central School Board for eight years, a tenure during which he oversaw the construction of Harrison Field and track, the beginnings of a new middle school, and an auditorium addition to the high school. His civic engagement also included roles on the Jasper County Tax Adjustment Board and the Jasper County Library Board, where he was instrumental in shaping the educational landscape of his hometown.

On March 21, 1969, John married the love of his life, Arlene, and together they shared a life filled with joy and mutual respect. His marriage was a testament to his capacity for deep love and companionship.

John's interests were as varied as they were rich; he was an avid reader, always with a book in hand. His intelligence was further reflected in his thoughtful conversations and the depth of knowledge he brought to every discussion. A man of faith, John attended St. Luke Lutheran Church, where he found spiritual solace and community.

Those who knew John would describe him as friendly, intelligent, and generous. He was a man who greeted everyone with a warm smile and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His generosity was not just in his actions but also in the way he shared his knowledge and experiences with others.

John's life was one of purpose and impact, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him and the community he served so faithfully. As we bid farewell to John James Lonergan, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of accomplishments, love, and the respect of all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 16, 2025 from 1 – 5 p.m. CST at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 10 a.m. CST at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer with Pastor Jeff Zell officiating.
