Brook, IN

Karen Lynn Ackerman, of Brook, Indiana, passed away on September 3, 2026, at the age of 76. She was born on May 6, 1950, in Munich, Germany.

Karen will be remembered as a bright, compassionate, and deeply caring woman whose warmth touched the lives of many. She was always wearing a smile, and those who knew her appreciated her wit, quick responses, and dry sense of humor. Beautiful both inside and out, she was sensitive to the needs of others and would do anything she could to help.

Education and learning were central to Karen’s life. She attended Indianapolis Public Grade School #57 and graduated from Thomas Carr Howe High School in Indianapolis in 1968. During her high school years, she was very active and participated in the girls' drill team, Future Teachers of America, and Student Council. She later earned her master’s degree in education from Indiana State University, continuing the path that would shape her life’s work.

Karen was a beloved English teacher at North Newton High School for many years. She loved her students and dedicated herself to helping each one reach his or her highest potential. One of her proudest accomplishments was watching her students succeed, and her influence as a teacher will be remembered by the many young people whose lives she helped shape through encouragement, care, and high expectations.

Outside the classroom, Karen was devoted to her pets, especially her dogs, which brought her much joy and companionship.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bartley E. Ackerman, her mother, Marilyn M. (Hagstrom) Ackerman, and her brother, Bradley Ackerman.

Surviving is her brother, Bartley C. Ackerman of San Diego, California.
