Mary Margaret Sheffer, 85, of Monon, IN, passed away on Sept. 16, 2026, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She was born on April 27, 1941, in Monticello, IN.
Mary graduated from Monon High School and married Kenny Sheffer on June 20, 1959. She devoted much of her life to her family as a homemaker. She was a very organized and caring woman whose kindness touched many people. She had a special way of cheering up her neighbors and others who were sick, and her warmth was felt wherever she went.
Her church and her faith were deeply important to her. Mary was an active member of Monon First Baptist Church, where she enjoyed attending Sunday School and Wednesday Night Bible Study. She also loved cooking and preparing dishes for Fifth Sunday dinners at church. In the community, she was a long-time and dedicated volunteer at the Monon Food Pantry, where she warmly greeted people and handled the bookkeeping. She loved people and truly enjoyed visiting with others and meeting new people. She also found joy in gardening and took great pleasure in tending to her flower beds.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Kenny Sheffer. She is also survived by her daughters, Sandra (Calvin) Corey of MS and Patricia Wilkinson of Monon, IN; her brother, Daniel (Vicki) Haskins of Rossville, IN; and her grandchildren, Johnny (Amanda) Barrentine, Danielle (Aaron) Hughes, David Barrentine, Chris (Hailey) Corey, Melissa (Kyle) Ritter, and Stuart Wilkinson. Ten great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen Haskins; her daughter, Kimberly Solas; and her brothers Frank, Russell, Harold, Tom, Sam, and Larry Haskins.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) at First Baptist Church, 408 Arch St., Monon, Indiana 47959. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor Jeff Scheffee officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Rensselaer, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monon First Baptist Church.
Mary will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her caring heart, her service to others, and the genuine joy she found in people, family, and church. Her life was a blessing to many, and her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
