Matthew Wright

March 13, 1948 — March 8, 2025

Matthew Wright, a cherished family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025 in Rensselaer, IN, where he had made his home for many years. Born on March 13, 1948, Matt was a man whose life was marked by dedication, love, and a warm sense of humor that touched all who knew him.

Matt was preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Cheryl Wright, his parents, Ray Wright and Sadie (Luttrell) Wright, his sisters Elizabeth Potts and Lou Lewark, his brothers David, Sam, and Kenneth Wright, son-in-law Donnie Rector, his grandson Matt Rector, and his grand pup Turner. His legacy continues through his surviving family, including his children Wanda Rector of Rensselaer, John Wright of South Bend, and Jessica (Justin) Bach of Rensselaer. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Casey (Randy) Cain, Alicia Murphy, Cindy (Gabe) Myers, Brody and Nova Bach, and delighted in the joys of his four great-grandchildren, Eli and Remi Murphy, Irelynn Cain and Ivy Myers. Matt is also survived by his brother Bob Wright and sisters Jane Kleba and Gladys Hutchens, as well as his grand pup Smoltzy, who brought him much comfort and companionship.

Matt’s strong work ethic was evident in his long-standing career at St. Joseph's College, where he served as a boiler room foreman for 47 years. His dedication to his work was matched only by the lifelong friendships he forged there, leaving an indelible mark on the college community.

Matt's interests and hobbies were diverse and enriched his life greatly. He was a proud member of the Rensselaer Moose Lodge, where he found fellowship and camaraderie. His passion for sports was undeniable; he managed his own traveling softball team for many years, sharing his love of the game with others. A true-blue fan, Matt never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite Chicago Cubs and Bears teams, and he found excitement and thrill in the world of NASCAR racing. He used to enjoy watching Bobby Knight-led IU men’s basketball teams play.

Above all, Matt cherished his role as a grandfather. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and he poured his love and generosity into every moment spent with them. Matt's handy nature and willingness to help others made him the go-to person for family and friends alike, and his loving guidance will be deeply missed.

Those who knew Matt would describe him as a loving and generous soul, always ready with a helping hand or a kind word. His ability to fix anything that was broken extended beyond the tangible; he had a unique way of mending spirits and brightening days with his presence.
