Crawfordsville, IN

Michael Steven Cain, affectionately known as Mike, was born on August 28, 1947, in Rensselaer, Indiana. He passed away peacefully at his home in Crawfordsville, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family on December 1, 2025.

Mike was a proud graduate of Rensselaer High School, where he completed his education in 1966. He was the former owner-operator of the Circle C Campground. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to his profession, serving as a union bricklayer for Local #4. After his retirement, Mike continued to be an active member of his community, contributing his time and talents to various local organizations, including St. Augustine Catholic Church and as a former member of the Indiana Sheriff’s Association.

In his personal life, Mike found joy in the simple pleasures of nature, particularly through bird watching, where eagles captured his admiration. His creative side flourished in woodworking, showcasing his craftsmanship and dedication. He enjoyed the camaraderie of playing cards with his buddies at the Community Center in Rensselaer. A devoted fan of sports, Mike passionately supported the IU Hoosiers and cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and sharing in their triumphs.

On December 22, 2017, in Willis, Texas, Mike married his beloved wife, Julie Riley, and she survives. Also surviving are his two children, Michelle (Steve) Dobson of Rensselaer, Indiana, and Michael Brandon (Jennifer) Cain of Rensselaer, Indiana; and three step-children, Desiree (Trevor) Carda of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Derek Brooks of Wolcott, Indiana, and Dane (Josie) Brooks of Crawfordsville, Indiana. He is also survived by one sister, Marsha (Mike) Gentry of Remington, Indiana; brother-in-law Charlie Spurgeon of Rensselaer, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Braylon (Shannon) Gagnon, Lexah Gagnon, Elise Dobson, Mickey Cain, Drew Cain, Dawson Cain, Charlotte Carda, and Heath Brooks; and three great-grandchildren: Isla, Wren, and Chloe.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred Cain; one sister, Jan Spurgeon; one brother, J.C. Cain; and his beloved grandson, Henry Carda.

As we honor Mike's memory, we remember a man of many talents and passions—an industrious worker, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a cherished friend. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the memories he created.

The family is planning a celebration of Mike's life for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Augustine Catholic School. Steinke Funeral Home is honored to be handling the cremation arrangements.
