Paul Eugene Mccurtain

Paul Eugene McCurtain, age 94, of Demotte, IN passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

He was born on August 17, 1929 in Parr, IN, the son of Mabel Jean Gundy (McCurtain) and Paul Crane, both deceased.

On December 2, 1950, Paul married Allegra Knapp-McCurtain at the First Presbyterian Church in Rensselaer, IN. She preceded him in death on April 7, 2013. They were together for 63 wonderful years. They moved to Chicago, and shortly after to Chicago Ridge where they raised their three children. Paul was a beloved community member, devoting many years to Khoury League boys basketball, coaching boys basketball teams, town trustee, school board member of Chicago Ridge Public Schools, and elder of the Presbyterian Church of Chicago Ridge.

Paul grew up in Parr and Fair Oaks, IN. He attended both Parr and Fair Oaks schools. He was raised by his loving grandparents, Lenza and Blanche McCurtain. Paul always said he credited his Grandma Blanche for his early life and the man that he then became. From early on, he enjoyed rabbit hunting with his big ole dog, basketball, fishing and hunting mushrooms and arrowheads. He was an avid basketball player throughout his life.

Paul started working at Chicago Cardboard Products Company in 1947 where he climbed the corporate ladder and retired as the head of the design department in 1991. In 1973, Paul and Allegra also designed, owned and operated Oak Lake Family Campground, Inc. in Fair Oaks, IN until June of 2009.

Paul is survived by his loving children: Karen McCurtain-Blair, Paul (Mandy) McCurtain, and Carol Ann McCurtain-Lahey. He was the loving grandfather of Allegra (Dennis) Sleep, Bradley (Christy) Sleep, Jenn (Lucas) Lahey-Curalli, Krystle (Tommy) Lahey, Brynn (John) McCurtain-Moore, Sean McCurtain, and Megan (Matt) McCurtain-Becker. He was great-grandfather to nine.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 4-8 p.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 11 a.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Pastor Wayne Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
