Raymond Lewis Mattocks

June 17, 1935 — January 31, 2017

Raymond Lewis Mattocks, 81, of Rensselaer, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Franciscan Health Rensselaer. He was born in Rensselaer on June 17, 1935, the son of Elwyn Walter Mattocks and Millie (McCurtain) Mattocks. Ray graduated from Fair Oaks High School and was a lifelong area resident. On June 17, 1956, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, he married his wife of 59 years, Marlene Esther (Schultz) Mattocks.


Ray was the owner/operator of E.W. Mattocks & Sons Excavating in Parr. He ran a dragline and operated a bulldozer, clearing a lot of ditches and digging ponds. He also sold insurance for New York Life. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s ball games and watching sporting events. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. Ray will be remembered fondly by his friends and neighbors for pitching for the National Champion Parr Elevator Softball Team.


Ray is survived by his loving family: six sons: Mark (Susan) Mattocks, Bret (Cathy) Mattocks, Lane Mattocks, Kreg (Glenda) Mattocks, Kirk Mattocks, and Dene (Mary Beth) Mattocks; one daughter, Marla (David) Falkenburg; three sisters: Betty McKay, Fran (Dennis) Brooks, and Lora (Jerry) Altstadt; nineteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife Marlene Mattocks; two brothers, Kenneth Mattocks and Gail Mattocks; and one sister, Evelyn Butler.


Visitation will be Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 704 E. Grace St., Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 12 p.m. with Pastor David Mueller officiating. Interment will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. A funeral luncheon will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Rensselaer following interment. Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
