Richard Garmong

Richard L. Garmong, age 90 of Morocco, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at George Ade Memorial Healthcare Center in Brook. He was born April 20, 1921 in Morocco, the son of the late Porter and Alma (Martin) Garmong.

Dick graduated from Morocco High School. He married Maxine Hanford in 1941. She preceded him in death in 1989. He married his second wife, Pauline Long in 1994, and she survives.

Dick farmed his entire life. He was a member of the United Church of Morocco, the KP Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and the Masonic Lodge. He loved farming and feeding his cattle. He enjoyed music, playing his saxophone with his family as well as in a band, and dancing the “Indiana Hop”.

Dick is survived by his wife Pauline; son Rick Garmong (wife: Gloria) of Rensselaer; daughter Janice Shirer (husband: Lee) of Morocco; four grandsons: Troy Shirer (wife: Mari) of Crown Point, Brad Shirer (wife: Reneé) of Indianapolis, Todd Garmong (wife: Susanne) of Marietta, GA, and Shawn Garmong (wife: Cindy) of Brook; and ten great-grandchildren: Richard, Catherine, and Ava Garmong of Marietta, GA, Austin Garmong of Brook, Brooke Shirer of Crown Point, Natalie and Justin Shirer of Crown Point, Zachary Shirer of Ft. Bragg, NC, and Nicholas and Evan Shirer of Indianapolis. A sister, Grace Bovard (husband: Jim) of Crown Point also survives. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Charles and John Garmong, and his first wife Maxine.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 12:00 p.m. at Steinke Funeral Home Brunton Chapel of Morocco. Pastor Jack Snell officiating. Interment will follow at Prairie Vine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to George Ade Memorial Healthcare Center.
