Shirley Mae Hough, a beloved homemaker and cherished member of her family, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, in Culver, Indiana. Born on August 11, 1945, in Watseka, Illinois, she was the daughter of Alice and Robert Purdy and grew up in Morocco, where she attended Morocco School.
Shirley will be remembered for her vibrant spirit and her unique ability to bring joy to those around her. Known for her humor and infectious laughter, she developed a reputation for making people smile. Her interests included puzzles, word searches, country music, and she was a devoted fan of the New Generation wrestling. Shirley also enjoyed making doily's and took great pleasure in spending time with her family and traveling.
Shirley cherished her weekends spent with her son, August Jr., where laughter and good times were plentiful. She shared a special bond with her daughter, Sharon, who fondly recalls taking her mother to wrestling matches in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
In addition to her lively personality, Shirley was a dedicated mother to her children: Debbie McElroy, Sharon McIlvain (Scott), Kathy Banister (Clyde), August Hough Jr. (Sam), Brenda Klemz, Dennis Hough, Tony Hough (Charity), Loretta Back (Justin), and Karen Newbolds (Dan). She also leaves behind 34 Grandchildren, 33 Great-Grandchildren, and her sister Carolyn Mathews.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, August Hough Sr., who passed away on September 18, 1999, as well as her parents, Alice and Robert Purdy, an infant son, Robert, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law.
To honor her life, a visitation will take place on January 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Steinke Funeral Home in Morocco, IN. Followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Pastor Josh Hubbell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Morocco.
Shirley Mae Hough will be profoundly missed and forever remembered for the love she shared and the laughter she inspired in everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
