Rensselaer, IN

Stephen R. Brandenburg, affectionately known as Steve, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on July 11, 1941, in Madison, Indiana, he was the only child of Roy and Doris Brandenburg. From a young age, Steve exhibited a vibrant spirit characterized by a love for athletics and the outdoors, excelling in basketball, football, and track. His passion for sports was only rivaled by his enjoyment of hunting and fishing, pursuits he cherished throughout his life.

Steve's academic journey began at Indiana State University, where he aimed for a teaching degree while also playing football for the Indiana State Sycamores. Among his notable achievements, he set an enduring individual game scoring record of 24 points, a testament to his athletic prowess that remained unbroken for 50 years. It was during these formative years that he met Sandra “Sandy” Klinker, and they were united in marriage on December 30, 1961.

Following the completion of his degree in 1963, Steve began his career in education as a Science teacher and Head Football Coach at Decatur High School in Decatur, Indiana. His commitment to teaching and coaching laid a strong foundation for a life dedicated to inspiring young minds. In 1974, Steve took on the role of defensive coordinator at Rensselaer Central High School, a position he held until 1996. His tenure was marked by significant accomplishments, including leading the 1977 undefeated football team, a crowning achievement in his coaching career. Alongside coaching, he continued to teach advanced Biology, eventually becoming the head of the Science Department before retiring in 2003.

Family was of utmost importance to Steve. In 1962, he and Sandy welcomed their first child, Debra. Later, in 1970 their second daughter Marianne was born followed by the birth of their son Jeff in 1972 and son Dan in 1973. Their family grew as they embraced a life filled with love and support. Steve's devotion extended to his five grandchildren: Nick Kempker, Brock Hall, Joe Hall, Isabella Brandenburg, and Bo Brandenburg, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

After retirement, Steve channeled his energy into gardening and farming, meticulously tending to his family property, where he cultivated an impressive vegetable garden, an apple orchard, and beautiful flowers. His witty, intellectual spirit was complemented by his honesty, strength, and unwavering work ethic—qualities that endeared him to those who knew him.

Steve is survived by his daughter Debra (Edward) Kempker, his daughter Marianne (Mike) Hall, his son Jeff (Steffany) Brandenburg, and his son Dan Brandenburg. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sandy, who passed away on March 3, 2023, and his parents, Roy and Doris Brandenburg.

In honoring Steve's memory, his family will celebrate his remarkable life privately, cherishing the countless memories and the profound impact he had on their lives.
