Obituary for Edgar List

Edgar Dallas List, age 74 of Rensselaer, lost his battle with cancer Saturday morning, Sept. 24, 2011 at Jasper County Hospital. He was born Oct. 31, 1936 in Rensselaer, son of the late Edgar C. List and Lula (Payne) List. He was a lifelong area resident. Dallas graduated from Rensselaer High School with the class of 1955. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a radar specialist and was stationed in Buffalo, NY.

On Oct. 10, 1964 he married Sharon K. Lilley in Rensselaer, and she survives. Dallas worked for the Coca-Cola Co. for a number of years. He also farmed for a time and had worked at the John Deere dealership in Rensselaer for many years. He worked for the Indiana Dept. of Transportation for 25 years, retiring in 2010. Dallas loved the Lord. He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Free Church, where he had served as a Deacon and a member of the church board for a number of years.

Dallas loved collecting things. He collected Coca-Cola memorabilia and coins, and was especially proud of his extensive collection of old license plates. He was a member of the Automobile License Plate Collector’s Association for the past 18 years. He also enjoyed refinishing old farm machinery and was a member of the Retired Iron Club. He loved farming and working outdoors. Dallas was a big sports fan. He loved auto racing and will be remembered for racing his #12 racecar at the Rensselaer Speedway. Later in life he was proud to have twice completed the Richard Petty Racing Experience at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He loved watching sports, especially NASCAR basketball and football. Dallas never met a stranger and will be remembered for his warm personality and his love of telling jokes. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his eight grandchildren.

Dallas is survived by his loving wife Sharon; four children: Lori Burns (husband: Wally) of Greenwood, Lisa McGill of Anna, IL, John Edgar List of Orlando, FL, and Jennifer Duffey (husband: Patrick) of Monticello; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Emily, Sarah and Samuel Burns, of Greenwood, Shawn and Alisha McGill of southern Illinois, and Caroline and Isla Duffey of Monticello. Five sisters also survive, Lovell Spurgeon and Wanda Murray, both of Rensselaer, Pat Alberts of Greenville, OH, Calla Gonzalez (husband: Diego) of Lafayette, and Kay Smith (husband: Larry) of Sarasota, FL. A brother, Henry “Jack” List (wife: Carita) of Brookston also survives. Dallas was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Stella Ramey and Nellie List.

Friends may call Tues., Sept. 27, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Wed., Sept. 28, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (Central Time) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be Wed., Sept. 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. (Central Time) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer, with Rev. Frederick C. Nose and Rev. Larry B. Hansen officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Rensselaer. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Bethany Evangelical Free Church.
