Obituary for Glenn McDonald

Glenn McDonald, age 91 of Rensselaer, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 23, 2012 at Jasper County Hospital. He was born in Rensselaer on Nov. 29, 1920, son of the late Robert Cecil and Blanche Cook McDonald. He was a lifelong area resident. He attended grade school at Hanging Grove School and graduated from Rensselaer High School with the class of 1938.

Glenn served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII and was stationed in England. On Sept. 27, 1947, in Medaryville, he married his wife of over 58 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Reidy. She preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 2005. Glenn was an electrician. He worked for Eshelman Electric and then was an electrician at St. Joseph’s College for 20 years. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and VFW Post #1279 of Rensselaer. Glenn enjoyed listening to Lawrence Welk music and music of the 1930's and '40s, and working crossword puzzles.

Glenn is survived by four children: Kathleen “Kathy” M. Ganz (husband: Tom) of West Lafayette, Robert “Bob” D. McDonald of Mooresville, NC, Thomas “Tom” M. McDonald of Rensselaer, and James “Jim” D. McDonald of Paris, France; and five grandchildren: Wendy Ganz Werle of Georgia, Thomas R. Ganz of New York, Tracy McDonald Clark of Monticello, Robbie McDonald of North Carolina, and Michael T. McDonald of Wheatfield. Nine great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Betty; two sisters: Florence Kerin and Doris Fellmy; daughter-in-law Helen McDonald and infant grandson Michael D. McDonald.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at Steinke Funeral Home in Rensselaer. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 12 noon with Father Don Davison officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Memory Gardens of Rensselaer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
