Obituary for Hamlin Smith Jr.

Hamlin ‘Bus’ Smith, Jr., age 80 of Rensselaer passed away January 20th at his home. He was born January 21, 1929 in Rensselaer, a son of the late Hamlin H. Smith Sr. and Edna Pearl (Romine) Smith. He graduated from Rensselaer High School with the Class of 1947. On May 21, 1950, in Rensselaer, he married Phyllis Hall. She survives. ‘Bus’ was a lifetime Jasper County resident and for over twenty years spent the winters in Pompano Beach, Florida. He owned an Insurance Agency, was a Real Estate Broker, and for several years owned City Finance in Rensselaer. He was a former Justice of the Peace and was a Rensselaer Park Board Member for several years. ‘Bus’ was a member of the Indiana National Guard for 15 years attaining the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Rensselaer Prairie Lodge No. 125, F.&A.M., a 32 degree Mason, former member of Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine. His hobby was raising, training and racing horses and belonged to USTA (horse trotting and racing association). He raced his horses in Florida for over twenty years. Surviving with his wife, Phyllis are children, Karen (Patrick) DeWees and Mike (Gretchen) Smith both of Rensselaer. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Graveside funeral services will be held at Weston Cemetery on January 22nd at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Marjorie Egger officiating. Memorials are suggested to the LaRue Swimming Pool. The Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer is handling the arrangements.
