Obituary for Lawson Cox

Lawson E. Cox, 96, Morocco died peacefully on January 11, 2012 at George Ade Memorial Healthcare Center. Cox along with his late wife Lela, was the owner/operator of Enos Texaco and the Willow Inn for many years. He was born in 1915 in Roselawn, IN and was a lifelong resident of the Morocco area. He graduated from Morocco High School in 1934, Gallagher Business School in 1936 and after a brief employment at U.S. Steel as a bookkeeper, he and Lela purchased the Enos Service Station from his widowed mother, Eva. Lawson and Lela were in business in Enos for more than 35 years.

Lawson and Lela were parents of two children, Nancy Cox Crandall (Donald) of Muskegon MI and James F. Cox of Houston TX. They had five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Lela, one brother, Maurice of San Diego, CA. He is survived by another brother, Howard Cox of Morocco.

Cox was well known in the Morocco area as a quiet, gentle man who was ready to help anyone in need. He was a member of the United Church of Morocco, the Morocco Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a lifelong avid reader and a collector of Indian artifacts, expanding a collection begun by his father and uncle. He recently proclaimed himself as the “oldest person on Facebook”.

Lawson died surrounded by family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Memorials are suggested to the United Church of Morocco or the Jasper County Hospital Home Health Care and Hospice. A memorial service for Lawson will be held at a later date.
