Obituary for Ray Hammond

Ray D. Hammond, 80 of Parr, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, 2011 at his home. He was born in Jasper County on Sept. 27, 1931, son of the late Merle Hammond and Minnie (Stowers) Hammond. He was a lifetime area resident. He graduated from Fair Oaks High School in 1951 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 – 1954.

On July 20, 1959 in Francesville, he married his wife of 52 years, Eva Spriggs, and she survives. Ray was an auto mechanic and worked for many local farmers doing maintenance work on their machinery. After he retired he worked part-time at Smith’s True Value Farm Store in Rensselaer. He was a member of American Legion Post #29 in Rensselaer. Ray enjoyed woodworking and working outdoors.

Surviving with his loving wife Eva are five children: David Ray Hammond (wife: Sarah) of Indianapolis, Kassandra Hammond (significant other: Richard Lewin) of Noblesville, Daniel Hammond (wife: Sue), Steve Hammond, and Jeff Hammond (significant other: Kelli Wang), all of Rensselaer; a brother, Howard “Bud” Hammond (wife: Mary), two sisters, Alice Carr (husband: Jim) and Arlene Coley (husband: Jim), all of Rensselaer. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Ray is also survived by “Belle”, his dog and longtime companion.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Friends may call Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. until time of services at 2:00 p.m. at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Rev. Marjorie Egger officiating. Interment follows Welsh Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Jasper County Hospital Home Health Care and Hospice.
