George S. “Sam” Hillis, 67, of Lake Village, passed away May 25, 2013 as the result of a motorcycle accident in Washington, DC. He was participating in the Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride honoring U.S. veterans. Sam was born in Gladewater, TX on April 10, 1946, son of the late Henry Ross Hillis and Maragaret Helen (Cooper) Hillis. He was a lifelong Newton County resident.
Sam graduated from Kentland High School in Kentland and went on to serve his Country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. On March 16, 1978, in Las Vegas, he married Rebecca Moore. He was a bus driver and Network Administrator for North Newton School Corporation. He also owned his own computer business, Sam’s Small Time Computing. He was a member of Morocco Masonic Lodge #372, American Legion Post #146, Widow’s Sons, Rolling Thunder – Chapter One, and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed computers and riding his motorcycle.
Sam is survived by his loving family: wife Rebecca Hillis of Lake Village; daughter Amber Gary of Lake Village; two sons, Dustin Gary of Lake Village and Cory Hillis of Lafayette; granddaughters: Libby Anderson, Isabella Winebrenner and Audrey Gary; and special granddaughter Zoey Howell. He was preceded in death by: his parents and one son, Bradley Hillis.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. (CDT) at the Morocco Elementary School Gymnasium. A Masonic service will be held at the gym on Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. (CDT) at the Morocco Elementary School Gymnasium with Pastor Edwin Bontreger officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Donations in Sam’s memory are suggested to Rolling Thunder – Chapter One or your favorite charity.
