Obituary for Selma Smart

Selma L. Smart, age 89 of Morocco, passed away early Saturday morning, February 19, 2011 at her home. She was born November 7, 1921 in Indianapolis, daughter of the late Clair C. and Olive C. (Wolever) Wolverton. She was educated at the Indianapolis Public Schools and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Indiana University.

On December 20, 1942 in Bloomington, she married Robert L. Smart. He preceded her in death October 24, 1979. Selma was a lifetime educator. She taught elementary school in Brook, Raub and Roselawn. After teaching elementary school, she taught adult education for many years. From 1981 – 2001, Selma was co-owner of The Lunchbox Restaurant in Morocco. Selma was a member of the Moroco First United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Literary Club, Projects Unlimited Club and the Owl Club.

Selma is survived by three sons, Nicholas (wife: Judy) Smart, Christopher (wife: Rosalita) Smart and Bruce (wife: Debra) Smart, all of Morocco; a daughter, Jennifer Smart-Bauer (Mrs. Mark) of Michigan City; a brother, George Wolverton of Clarksville, IN, and grandchildren Jeffrey (wife: Nellie) Smart, Gregory Smart, Boyd T. Smart II and John Smart, all of Morocco. Three great-grandchildren also survive.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son, The Honorable Robert B. Smart and two brothers, Phillip Wolverton and Clair K. Wolverton.

Friends may call at the Morocco First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 from 1:00 P.M. until time of funeral service at 3:00 P.M. Rev. Greg Waggoner is officiating. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
